Applying to a Houston University: Deadlines, ApplyTexas and What Each Campus Wants

This page is part of the big-picture guide to Houston's college scene, and it exists because Houston's seven universities don't all run on the same calendar or even the same application platform. Missing that distinction is the single easiest way to lose a scholarship you'd otherwise have qualified for, so treat the deadlines below as the thing to confirm first, before you start writing an essay. Dates shift slightly year to year, so verify each one directly on the school's site once you're close to applying, but the numbers here reflect the current Fall 2027 admissions cycle as published by each school.

Two Systems, Not One

Houston's public universities, UH, TSU, UHD and UHCL, all accept applications through ApplyTexas, the state's shared application portal, and most also accept the Common App. Rice runs its admissions process independently of that state system, on its own track with its own decision plans, which matters because a student applying to both a public Houston school and Rice is effectively managing two separate timelines, not one shared deadline.

University of Houston

UH's general freshman application deadline for Fall 2027 entry is May 31, 2027, with supporting information, including the application fee, self-reported transcript details and test scores if submitted, due by June 7, 2027. That's the deadline to simply be considered for admission. Scholarships run on a much earlier clock: UH's Fall 2027 scholarship priority deadline is November 2, 2026, with supporting materials due November 9, 2026. Applying by the general deadline gets you in the door, but applying by the scholarship deadline is what actually puts UH's merit money on the table, and the gap between those two dates is nearly seven months.

Texas Southern University, UHD and UHCL

The other public campuses run tighter, more traditional calendars than UH's rolling-style process. Texas Southern University publishes a fixed application deadline of July 15, with no early action or early decision option, so there's no early-bird advantage to chase beyond simply applying with time to spare. University of Houston-Downtown lists a fall priority deadline of June 1, after which the school continues reviewing applications on a rolling basis as space allows. University of Houston-Clear Lake runs a similar structure, with a fall priority deadline around July 15 and a final deadline around August 1. None of these three schools reward an early application with a better admissions outcome the way a binding decision plan would, but applying near the priority date rather than the final one generally means more time for financial aid processing and housing selection.

Rice's Separate Track

Rice doesn't use ApplyTexas at all. Applicants use the Common App or the Coalition Application and choose between three decision plans: Early Decision I, a binding plan due November 1; Early Decision II, also binding, due January 4; and Regular Decision, non-binding, also due January 4. Both early decision rounds commit an admitted student to enroll if accepted, which is worth weighing seriously since Rice's aid packages are strong enough that the financial picture is usually clear well before a binding deadline would force a decision blind.

The Other Private Schools

University of St. Thomas and Houston Christian University both run more flexible calendars than Rice's binding plans. St. Thomas typically sets an Early Action deadline around November 1 and a Regular Decision deadline around January 15, after which it continues considering applications on a rolling, space-available basis. Houston Christian University publishes a general fall application deadline of August 1, considerably later than any of the other schools on this list, which makes it a realistic option for a student who's running behind on the rest of this list.

The Aid Deadline That Actually Decides Your Bill

Almost none of the deadlines above are the one that determines how much you actually pay. Texas sets a state priority deadline of January 15 each year for financial aid, the FAFSA or the TASFA for students who qualify under it, and that date is what UH's Cougar Promise and similar Texas tuition-guarantee programs key off of. For the Fall 2027 cycle, that lands on January 15, 2027. Missing an admissions deadline closes a door outright; missing this one usually just means less aid, which in practice can cost more.

Once You Know the Dates

If any of these deadlines feel out of reach because you're coming from a two-year school rather than straight out of high school, the community-college transfer route many Houston students take runs on a different set of dates and requirements worth checking separately. And once admission is settled, it's worth lining these deadlines up against what each of these schools actually bills once you're admitted, since a scholarship deadline missed by a few weeks can be the difference between two schools that looked similarly priced on paper.

Do I apply to Rice the same way I apply to UH?

No. UH, along with TSU, UHD and UHCL, uses the state's ApplyTexas system. Rice runs its own process entirely through the Common App or Coalition Application, with its own separate decision plans and deadlines.

What happens if I miss UH's scholarship priority deadline but not the general deadline?

You can still be admitted, since the general application deadline runs months later, but you'll likely be considered for a smaller pool of scholarship funding, if any, since most of UH's merit aid is awarded to students who met the earlier priority date.

Is Rice's Early Decision binding?

Yes, both Early Decision I and Early Decision II at Rice are binding, meaning an admitted student is expected to enroll and withdraw applications from other schools. Regular Decision is non-binding.
